The ‘REACT STUDY’

WHAT ARE FUNGI?

  • Fungi are organisms, such as moulds and mushrooms, which we see in daily life.
  • Fungal spores are microscopic particles that allow fungi to reproduce, serving a similar purpose to that of seeds in the plant world although the mechanism is different.
  • The spores from fungi are plentiful and are inhaled by us all every day.

WHY ARE WE DOING THE STUDY?

  • We know that people with asthma can also be allergic to certain substances and that this affects the control of the disease.
  • We know that people with severe asthma that are allergic to fungi do worse over time than those that are not allergic to fungi.
  • We do not know how people with mild to moderate asthma, or those with sarcoidosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are affected by fungal allergy.
  • We do not know what effects fungal allergy has on airway inflammation and scaring.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL IT TAKE?

  • The clinical visit will just take a few hours.
  • If you opt to have a bronchoscopy (telescope test into the lungs) then this will occur on another visit and will take half a day.

WHAT WILL IT INVOLVE?

  • Filling in some questionnaires.
  • Answering some questions about your health.
  • Having some routine clinical tests, breathing tests, skin prick allergy tests and blood tests.
  • Having an imaging scan of the chest (CT scan).  This is optional.
  • Having a telescope test into the lungs, called a bronchoscopy.  This is optional.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO DO THIS RESEARCH STUDY IF YOU ARE OVER 18 YRS & ARE AFFECTED BY:

  • ASTHMA
  • SARCOIDOSIS
  • IDIOPATHIC PULMONARY FIBROSIS
  • ARE FIT AND WELL WITH NO LUNG PROBLEMS
  • ARE FIT AND WELL WITH NO LUNG PROBLEMS BUT HAVE HAY FEVER
  • PLEASE GET IN TOUCH AND TALK TO US ABOUT JOINING THE STUDY SO THAT WE CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HOW FUNGI AFFECT INFLAMMATION AND SCARING IN THE LUNGS.
