On World Asthma Day 2015, the BRU continue to support and commit to our understanding of asthma and
helping to develop new treatments and therapies. Researchers at the BRU have a wide portfolio of research
looking at understanding the disease, from investigating biomarkers in the blood and sputum, looking at
genetics, through to understanding how certain exposures, such as allergy-triggering substances contribute
to the development or worsening of asthma.
An estimated 300 million people worldwide are living with asthma, about five million of these are in the UK.
This means that asthma affects one in five households. Asthma is a common, long-term or chronic,
disease. It affects, inflames and narrows the airways of the lungs, causing wheezing, breathlessness, chest
tightness and coughing. Three people die every single day because of asthma.
You can find some information on some of our current research projects on Our Research Studies page. For

In support of World Asthma Day - today we held a stand at main reception Glenfield Hospital, to provide
information about Asthma and Asthma Research taking place in Leicester Hospitals. Thank you to
everyone who stopped to talk to us and we look forward to seeing some of you on our research!
